Like Houston’s weather, from the blistering heat to the 15 minutes of snow, fashion is all about change – and 2017 was a banner year.
We gained a runway beauty in Kaia Gerber, daughter of supermodel Cindy Crawford, who walked in her first New York Fashion Week show for Calvin Klein.
Cypress mom and breast-cancer survivor Claudia Sierra underwent eight surgeries, costing nearly $50,000, to look like first lady Melania Trump. Sierra revealed her new look during an event at Saks Fifth Avenue Galleria. Her procedures included a revision breast reconstruction, revision rhinoplasty, tummy tuck, liposuction, Brazilian butt lift, eyelid lift, Botox, fillers and unspecified injectable treatments, all done by Houston Plastic Surgeon Dr. Franklin Rose.
Throw in an Astros’ World Series and J.J. Watt, and it was a standout year of style. Cruise through our slideshow to see our favorite moments of 2017.
The supers
The original super models Carla Bruni, Claudia Schiffer, Donatella Versace, Naomi Campbell, Cindy Crawford and Helena Christensen looked like shimmering goddesses as they appeared on the Versace runway at Milan Fashion Week for the 20th anniversary of Gianni Versace’s death. The five women all modeled in the 1980s and ’90s for the late designer, who was murdered in July 1997 in Miami.
A + plus
Ashley Graham became the first plus-size model to walk the runway for Michael Kors at New York Fashion Week. The model also got candid about beauty in her book, “A New Model: What Confidence and Power Really Look Like” (HarperCollins).
Oscar and Andre
Former Vogue editor Andre Leon Talley set up shop in Houston while he organized the opening of “The Glamour and Romance of Oscar de la Renta” exhibit at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. Talley, who also curated the exhibit, was great friends with the late fashion designer.
Bravo
The roar of applause heard at the 2017 ESPYS in Los Angeles wasn’t for an athlete but for former first lady Michelle Obama, who continued to celebrate eclectic designers by wearing a sizzling little black dress by Cushnie et Ochs.
Take a number
Louis Vuitton’s collaboration with the streetwear brand Supreme had such a cult following that shoppers waited for nearly a week outside The Galleria for a rumored pop-up shop that never happened.
The look-alike
Cypress mom and breast-cancer survivor Claudia Sierra underwent eight surgeries, costing nearly $50,000, to look like first lady Melania Trump. Sierra revealed her new look during an event at Saks Fifth Avenue Galleria. Her procedures included a revision breast reconstruction, revision rhinoplasty, tummy tuck, liposuction, Brazilian butt lift, eyelid lift, Botox, fillers and unspecified injectable treatments, all done by Dr. Franklin Rose.
Vintage ‘Stros
Kate Upton had shoppers scouring the Internet for the $200 vintage Astros sweater she wore during Game 3 of the World Series in Houston.
More options
Rihanna went boldly where few beauty brands have gone by offering 40 foundation shades, from the lightest white to the deepest dark, with her new Fenty Beauty line at Sephora. Many of the shades sold out quickly.
Cover statements
Sports Illustrated was Houston Strong, naming the Astros’ José Altuve and Texans’ J.J. Watt as Sportsperson of the Year. Altuve even wore a look by the Houston-based Festari for Men. Former NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick, who was named GQ’s 2017 Citizen of the Year, requested only to wear black designers for the magazine shoot. Model Adwoa Aboah graced the December cover for editor Edward Enninful’s first edition of British Vogue. Enninful, a native of Ghana, became the magazine’s first male editor in the magazine’s 101-year history.
Rising star
The engagement of Britain’s Prince Harry and actress Meghan Markle was the news heard around the world. Mostly because Markle doesn’t fit the royal profile. She’s American, older (by three years), biracial and divorced. She’s also super stylish, so fashion watchers will be tracking Markle’s sparkle in the new year.
